Generation rent is still in full flow, and the London rental market is no exception. More people are renting for longer, and the notion of rental properties being a ‘stop gap’ is becoming outdated. A common misconception of renting is that it’s hard to make somewhere feel like a home, so we have put together five easy ways to make your mark on your rental property.
Artwork
Leaning and tilting is the new hanging! Unless you have prior consent from your landlord to turn your rental into the Tate, why not frame a large piece of art or a poster and lean it against the wall for a stylish statement? You can also experiment with mantles, shelving or a freestanding cabinet.
Plants
Bring the outside in! If you are feeling green fingered, a large Monstera can pack a punch in the blandest of spaces. However, if you are short on time, and have a poor track history with keeping plants alive, succulents can be a low maintenance alternative. Additionally, a small kitchen herb garden is not only pleasing to the eye, but handy for budding chefs.
Lighting
Lights, candles, floor lamps and statement pendant lights can all change the mood of the room. You may not be able to change the position of the ceiling light, but you can control the style. An eye catching floor lamp can alter the feel and focus of a whole room, and can be taken with you when you move on.
Accessories
Introduce some colour and texture with accessories and layering. A neutral backdrop is perfect for a pop of colour from some vibrant cushions or a throw, and the plainest of bathrooms can be jazzed up with some funky towels. Floors are not to be forgotten too, a quirky rug not only adds some texture and colour, but also helps to protect your floors from any damage.
Personality
It’s a misnomer that rental properties lack in personality; ultimately it is up to you to add in the things that you love. Unsure how? Fill your bookcases with treasures and memories, add in some fridge magnets and some photographs, and your rental will really start feeling like a home.
