Winter gardens, or sky gardens as some call them, are definitely the new must have property accessory in London. This versatile indoor- outdoor space is perfect all year round, and many new developments are starting to include them in their list of specifications.

A modern take on the covered balcony, these glass boxes have less emphasis on gardening, and more on providing an extension to the living area in new apartments. Often designed as an alcove off the main living area, winter gardens are designed with comfort and style in mind. In a high rise building, where residents can often feel a disconnection to the outside world, winter gardens offer the opportunity to bring the outside in and are an excellent way of enjoying the dramatic views across London’s skyline, minus the windchill factor, exhaust fumes or city noise.

Winter gardens barely existed at the start of the last decade, but they have grown in popularity over the last few years. No longer looking like they’ve been bolted on as an added extra, winter gardens blend seamlessly into the modern design of high rise residential buildings, offering an alternative design to the traditional inset or projecting balcony. This extra amenity has proved popular with buyers keen on increasing interior square footage; no doubt is now popular with developers too, who have seen an increase in asking prices.

Goodman’s Fields, by Berkeley Homes, was the company’s first project to feature winter gardens. Explaining that “people can;t always use the balcony” due to noise, pollution or the weather, Piers Clanford, managing director, saw a huge demand for apartments that featured the 70 sq ft glass alcoves. 250 City Road, also by Berkeley Homes, have also included this feature within the development, citing their popularity.
